It has the same use in English, like bunker buster, bronco buster, dustbuster, Myth Busters, etc. バスター is derived from Buster, which means " one that destroys, eliminates". In the specific sword sense, the bastard portion was originally in reference to the way the blade length was roughly in between the single-handed shorter swords in common use and the double-handed greatswords of the time. PS: As notes in the comment, the specific phrasing バスターソード is most likely from bastard sword as a borrowing in toto (as a whole term), rather than an application of バスター from baseball. If this is the same バスター that was used for these other weapons in manga and anime, it might have originally arisen as a play on the perceived littleness of the weapon or character, in contrast to the sizable wallop of the actual shot or strike: presenting as a small thing (like a bunt), but actually hitting harder than that (as an actual full baseball swing would do). See also the Japanese Wikipedia article on バスター. Poking around in Kotobank's page for バスター, we see that this is probably the same word that arose from baseball, as a corruption or shift from the original English phrase bastard bunt, in reference to a play where the batter stands as if to bunt the ball, and then once the pitch is thrown, they shift to a regular batting stance in an effort to hit the ball with real force (as mentioned, for example, in this thread about Little League). I suspect that バスター might be one such word. There's a number of words in Japanese that come from English, but not via the route expected. The threat of a teacher-student affair is treated with Lifetime-style melodrama. Accent aside, Tom’s concern is straight-forwardly serious. Are these stumbles or clues? I’m curious. The party Jenny goes to is almost out of a John Hughes movie, and the young characters’ use of social media and texting is hopelessly antiquated. The show feels like somebody watched a “kids out of control” news report 10 years ago and did nothing to update their behavior. Might Tom turn out to be a Russian spy or a masquerading undercover American? Probably not. His British accent feels like it could almost be a sleight of hand, the distraction from the intensity of his concern and questions about what Tom was doing when it wife died. What keeps it watchable is the sense of unease or maybe inconsistency. It’s not overwhelmingly shocking, perceptive or funny. It’s a genre that can be freshened by the extremes of the secrets, by a perceptive sociological critique of some sort, by an exaggerated satirical bent. There’s also a burgeoning sex scandal at the local school, and then there’s a dead body.Ĭoben is the series’ credited creator, but the two episodes sent to critics were written by Danny Brocklehurst ( Shameless) and directed by Daniel Nettheim ( Dance Academy), and they all presumably recognize they’re not blazing fresh ground. Some of the secrets are small, like the couple avoiding telling their kids that they’re getting divorce after the school year. Helping in the investigation are Tom’s new girlfriend Sophie (Amanda Abbington), a local detective, and the unprepared force’s newest investigator Emma (Hannah Arterton), a transfer from the big city.Īgain, the conceit here is that Tom lives in an enclave built for the express purpose of safety, with cameras distributed throughout for both protection and to negate secrets, and yet everybody he comes in contact with is hiding a secret. When Jenny goes out to a raging party and never returns, Tom is forced to turn amateur gumshoe in a mystery in which everybody, including his best friend Pete (Marc Warren) and his various seemingly upstanding neighbors could be a suspect. Hall plays Tom, a pediatric surgeon still grieving the death of his wife and struggling to relate to his two daughters, particularly rebellious teen Jenny (Amy James-Kelly). In this case, it’s an enclosed community and, in the opening credits, the show’s title is written in the severe metal gate that offers residents the illusion of security. The eight-episode series, created by American novelist Harlan Coben, fits into several tried-and-true TV genres, starting with the story of a quiet suburb in which behind every carefully manicured hedge or pristinely skimmed swimming pool lurks a festering secret. Hall’s accent, reasonably consistent and yet rarely believable, is one of many things on Safe that are askew and, the more I think about it, the more I can’t tell if it’s intentional if not particularly satisfying, or merely bad. In Netflix’s upcoming thriller Safe, Hall is a primary selling point, and it’s impossible to listen to him say “privacy” or “uni” in a proper British accent without losing concentration for the next two or three lines of dialogue. These motherboards will have a slightly altered feature set and thus support them new upcoming apples from Intel. Z77 is of course the Intel chipset for the upcoming Ivy bridge based processors. This article is a full review of what you may expect from the TUF series Sabertooth Z77, have peek after which we'll dive right into the photo shoot. Z77 is of course the Intel chipset predominantly released for Ivy Bridge based processors. The Z87 enthusiast themed mainboard is intended for Intel's 22nm Haswell processors on Socket LGA1150. We review, test and benchmark the ASUS Sabertooth Z87 TUF series motherboard. Again cool and Quiet is enabled where the FAN RPM is set as low as possible. Peak temperatures remain decent as well, the X4 980 with its four cores stressed under Prime95 software. We are cooling the processors with an OCZ Vendetta heatpipe based cooler only and have cool and quiet activated. Processor temperatures while idle remain below 40 Degrees C based on air cooling for all three processors. The slightly higher wattage compared to reference products can be explained due to the use of extra chips on motherboards, like the USB 3.0 controllers, Hydra IC, PLX switch chip, extra SATA controllers, VIA HUB ands so on. And once we stress the CPU cores overall power consumption went up towards 203W We average out at roughly 119W idle (with a GeForce GTX 580 - 8GB Memory and one SSD installed). The motherboard demands a little more power though that can be tweaked in the BIOS as you get several power state options. This is a complete PC with a high-end graphics card inserted (but GPU not stressed).īTW bear in mind that these tests are all very motherboard dependant and results can (and will) vary per PC setup. Our system idles merely at roughly 120 Watts depending on the OS energy saving setting. As you can see, once we stress all four CPU cores with Prime95 (stress test), our power consumption maxes out at just under 200 Watts. Have a look below to see how we measure and traumatize the processor. Today's setup uses the motherboard on which we seated a dedicated graphics card (GeForce GTX 580), you'll notice that the end-result overall for idle and peak wattage remains good. When was the last time you cleaned it? Dirty Fans = Less Air Flow.Dirty Radiator = Less Cooling.Add them together = No Cooling. The Phenom II processor tested today still has that respectable TDP (peak wattage) of 125 Watts. This gives you more options and allows for larger and more powerful lights.Īnother option for recessed lighting is pattresses, which are plywood squares that can either be cut using a utility knife or ordered pre-cut. You can either leave the square of the grid empty or cut a hole for the light within a ceiling tile. This may not make them an ideal choice for office environments.īy securing lights directly to the ceiling grid, it is possible to install larger lights onto a suspended ceiling. It is worth considering that some people may find that using computer screens alongside fluorescent lights can cause eye strain and headaches. Unlike LED’s, the bulbs can easily be replaced if required. They are lightweight and designed to hang in suspended ceilings. Recessed fluorescent lights can hold multiple fluorescent bulbs depending on the design. They provide a bright light output while being low glare due to their protective covering, or ‘parabolic louvres’. These panels fit into the suspended ceiling grids much like the LED lights. You can select an image from a database, or even provide your own.Ī drawback of LED sky ceiling panels is their cost, an entry level 1200mm by 1200mm tile will set you back around £5,000, with much higher prices for sets, or custom images. These can be used in places like office boardrooms, restaurants, and nightclubs. An LED sky ceiling shows a still image, often of nature or clouds, on a LED panel lit at the same colour temperature of daylight.Ī series of LED sky ceiling panels can be planned out to give the impression of a large skylight. LED Sky PanelsĪnother option for LED suspended ceiling lights are LED sky ceilings, a recent innovation in the office and retail arena. LED lights for suspended ceilings tend to be universal in style, with a thin metal border surrounding a square light, which allows them to fit seamlessly within a suspended ceiling. This is used in places where visibility is most important, like warehouses, dentists offices, and hospitals. 4000k has a warm effect and is bright enough to work under and perfect for everything from commercial settings to dining rooms.Ħ000k is a colder white effect. It is often used in offices, salons, kitchens, and schools. LED lights come in three main colour temperatures, 4000k, 5000k, and 6000k, allowing for different lighting schemes.Ĥ000k is a more neutral colour. The main benefit offered by LED panel lights is they are flicker free, and have a low energy usage. LED lighting tiles come in a range of lumens, depending on your needs and are quick and easy to install. They are thin and lightweight, which means they do not require any further or additional support. LED panel lights are an energy efficient option for suspended ceilings and are designed to fit into a grid much like a regular tile. Types of Suspended Ceiling Lights LED Ceiling Lights In this section we provide a quick overview of the options available for suspended ceiling lights. Proper lighting is essential for all spaces, particularly public buildings such as offices, exhibition halls, or schools. There are several types of lights available for suspended ceilings in a broad range of styles. These can either be the same shape and size as the tiles, fixing into the grid in the same fashion, or they can be separate lights that are attached to or fixed within the tiles. Abrasives, Fillers, Sealants & LubricantsĪlongside the ceiling tiles within a suspended ceiling system, you will also find suspended ceiling lights.Adhesives, Compounds, Plaster & Finishing. Initially Trico is smart enough to not meander, making him a helpful contributor rather than an over-sized escort mission, which lasts until the player is given more direct control of Trico through orders. Because they both have different skills and are only semi-cooperative at the start, Trico will sometimes find a solution to a problem on his own, such as realizing he can make a jump the boy can’t, and that’s the key to progressing. The boy and Trico have to work together, but their communication is limited to sounds and gestures. However, as you’re both navigating through the world, Trico is often unable to get through certain obstacles without your assistance, meaning the boy has to utilize his own talents to help Trico find his way out as well.Īt first, playing The Last Guardian is like playing a cooperative game alongside someone with a language barrier. Trico’s large size means he can traverse great distances and essentially acts as the boy’s bodyguard. As the boy, you’ll have to utilize both your own skills and Trico’s in order to progress through the dungeons and puzzles within the ruin. Instead, the boy and Trico’s relationship evolves from hostility to fierce loyalty through the duo’s cooperation as the game goes on. After nursing Trico back to health and releasing him from his shackles, the two begin their journey to escape captivity.įor the most part, The Last Guardian’s minimalistic story is told without words. Upon regaining consciousness, he meets a massive griffon-like creature named Trico who has been badly hurt and taken prisoner as well. The Last Guardian tells the story of a young boy who wakes up to find himself prisoner in the remnants of a long-abandoned castle. In its earliest hours, The Last Guardian’s premise had me spellbound, but as I progressed through the ruined prisons of its world, I found myself in a near constant state of frustration, only to have a temporary reprieve when the game’s narrative took center stage. While this story of a boy and his beast is heartfelt and portrays a beautiful unlikely friendship with poignant restraint, The Last Guardian’s mechanical and technical issues unmask a game that was clearly meant to be released closer to its original unveiling in 2009. However, the puzzles are less physics based than those games and you quickly begin to recognise different puzzle pieces being reused in different situations.Calling The Last Guardian “a product of its time” may seem like a misnomer, but, considering the game’s troubled development, it isn’t surprising that the long-awaited followup to Shadow of the Colossus feels a bit dated now that it’s finally here in 2016. The mechanics are simple but flexible and at first this seems like it’s going to be more than a match for Playdead’s classics. The cat-monkey also has the strange ability to hypnotise creatures (we didn’t fully understand this bit, but it has something to do with a special device Lana finds) and move them backwards and forwards to do things like activate switches and block solar panels. This strange mixture of cat and monkey is much more limber, and Lana quickly learns to instruct it to move to particular locations and operate simple switches or chew through wires. Lana can’t run very fast, or jump very far, but early on she finds an alien creature in a cage and befriends it. Although you can sometimes backtrack a little, if you feel you’ve missed one of the shrines with clues to the planet’s history, that’s never actively encouraged and instead the game splits itself up into small sections that are just a couple of screens wide, where you have to platform and puzzle your way out, often accompanied by a bit of light stealth action. |
